Berlin Zoo unveils memorial to Knut the polar bear - Titled “Knut - The Dreamer” which was created by artist Josef Tabachnyk.
Knut was born at Berlin Zoo on 5 December 2006 but was rejected by his mother Tosca. The keepers at Berlin Zoo made the decision to hand rear him. Knut spent the first 44 days of his life in an incubator before zookeeper Thomas Dörflein began raising him. Not long after his birth Knut started to become known worldwide and for animal lovers all around the world to fall in love with him, and by time Knut had reached adolescence he became an international celebrity.
Tragically on 19 March 2011, Knut died from drowning after collapsing into his enclosure’s pool while suffering from encephalitis, a disease of the brain. Knut was just aged four when he died. Although gone, with this memorial of Knut he will never be forgotten and will live on.
